A concept model helps us understand a complex system via pictures. We make concept models for ourselves, as we try to understand something. We make them for others to give them a framework for understanding what we’ve figured out. Concept models are not a complete map of a system, but rather an edited selection that tells a story.

They typically take one of three forms:

1. Elements

This model shows the elements of a system and the elements’ relationships to each other. You might draw a game or a website or a business model—anything complicated is more easily understood with a model.

The elements can be layered, or parts of a whole, or overlapping. Vary the size of each element to express importance.
